Artist Retreat
#2261148 Blakeney 24x24
The concept of a retreat has been around for a long time.
Recently the idea has been applied to artists. Thirty years ago, two artist friends and I developed a program, Artists Painting with Artists. It involved a gathering at a resort where a group of artists could paint and learn from each other. It lasted for thirty years.
Last week twenty ECOAA members assembled for three days of plein air and studio painting.
The East Central Ontario Art Association has been successful at running retreats such as the one I just enjoyed at the Galilee Center in Arnprior.
#2261149 Elegence in the Rain 16x20
It began with a guest professional artist giving a presentation and demonstration on the techniques of painting.
In the following days the artists painted and learned from each other. On the last evening after dinner we displayed our work to cheers and commendation from all. The next day we parted for home, happy for the experience and knowledge learned.
I have learned much from books and workshops.
In time I came to realize that the importance of knowing myself and my place in this world has had a positive effect on my art. Getting to know other artists has given me a better insight and I discovered the joy of friendship and the gratitude from helping others.
Retreats or whatever they are called can be a great way to learn by experiencing.
